Walker Creek, February 10th 2008.

The ocean was rough; the sky was windy but clear and sunny. We probably could have gotten some exercise paddling in Tomales Bay but we had just been there the day before. Where can you go paddling under these conditions? Storm Steiger once told me that Walker Creek is a good place to go to get out of the wind near Tomales Bay. Kate DesLauriers and I decided to give it a try.

There is a county park on Keys Creek with access to the muddy bank for launching. Kate and I slipped into the water there and paddled the short distance to the fork where Walker Creek ends. We paddled under Highway One and started paddling deep into private property in Marin County.

According to the topographic maps Walker Creek runs for miles and miles into the hills here. According to Google Maps this creek is a winding line of trees in an area that is mostly brown grass-covered hills. Storm told me that when the weather and tides are right you could in fact go miles up this creek. We had a not-so high tide and it had not rained recently so our expectations were pretty low. The thing that impeded our progress the most was logjams blocking the creek. Next time I’m bringing a bucksaw with me. We managed to work around or walk around these until the creek became so shallow and fast that we didn’t want to take our fiberglass kayaks any farther. Next time I’ll come in a little river kayak that I won’t mind dragging up the creek farther.
