Our last morning we got up early again to go surfing one last time at Mariela's Surfing Beach. As we approached the beach the local fisherman launched his dugout canoe and sailed past us towards the Tortugas Islands. I told Maryly that this means the wind will not come up today (the locals know the weather patterns best). Paloma agrees with me. We found the water to be mild and had trouble finding waves big enough to ride. Following Paloma's example I used the mild waves to practice surfing backwards. This is a useful skill because you often get turned the wrong way in rougher water. We headed back after an hour or less of playing and finished packing for the ride back to civilization.
