I took Kate DesLauriers with me for a surfing trip to Bolinas. But when we launched our kayaks we discovered that the surf was very mild. Even the shallow spot north of the end of Brighton Road had no waves worth trying out. So we went for a short paddle out to the Duxbury Reef. We went rock gardening in the shallows behind the reef and landed on a sandy beach to eat our lunch.

The tide was dropping in the afternoon so we headed back after lunch to avoid getting stuck in the shallows around the reef. On the innermost corner of Bolinas Bay, way inside the reef, we found a shallow area choked with kelp. Despite the kelp and the distance from the open sea, the northwest swell was wrapping all the way around the reef and rising up into perfect little surfing waves. It reminded me of a shallow place at Pillar Point that I think is called “The Micro Wave”. We were able to catch a few surfing rides on our kayaks after all on this day!
