Four years ago I was lucky enough to be invited on a kayak expedition to Baja with Penny Wells and a bunch of other great people. On that trip we paddled from Gonzaga Bay to Los Angeles Bay . Two years later the same group of people (plus or minus one) went to Baja for a continuation of that trip. We paddled from LA Bay down to San Francisquito. At the end of that trip, Penny was contemplating how we might continue the trip down the next section of the coastline, but shuttling the cars would be very difficult. Then between the recent Christmas and New Years, John Somers and I went back to San Francisquito to paddle around some offshore islands. While we were there we met Alberto Lucero Walfors who lived on the bluff above the beach. We talked about hiring him to shuttle kayaks in his truck or ponga for various trips.
When I returned home I called Penny and told her about Alberto. She was thrilled and the two of us planned a trip based on the availability of Alberto. The plan we settled on required calling Alberto up on his sometimes working cell phone and arranging to meet him far from home. After weeks of trying I was finally able to contact Alberto and make arrangements. Alberto would drive out to visit his parents and his daughter who was attending school in San Ignacio. This is a beautiful little oasis town in Baja on the main Highway One, so we would have an easy drive. Alberto would follow us to Santa Rosalia and help us make arrangements to leave the cars there in a safe place. Then he would drive us and our kayaks in his truck back to his home in San Francisquito. We would paddle 100 miles of coastline down to our cars. Even on the ride back we would be on Highway One the whole way and would never have to drive on the bad dirt roads of Baja!
Approximately the same group as last time signed up for the trip. Don Fleming and Maryly Snow were unable to come. John Barnett was able to join us. He is a bask member that I did not know well but Penny has been on several other Baja trips with him. Bob Stender, Joe Petolino, and Mary Marcia Cassoley who were on previous trips were able to come along again.
